HACU previews conference and unveils artwork

The Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) kicked off its Silver Anniversary celebrations on Oct. 18, with an Unveiling Event in San Antonio, Texas, the city where the Association was founded 25 years ago.

Internationally-renowned artist and San Antonio native Jesse Treviño and HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores unveil a special 25th Anniversary artwork done by Treviño, commissioned to commemorate the Association’s milestone.
More than 100 individuals attended the event where HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores spoke about highlights of HACU’s 25th Annual Conference themed “25 years of Championing Hispanic Higher Education” taking place on October 29-31 at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio.

Internationally-renowned artist and San Antonio native Jesse Treviño unveiled a special 25th Anniversary artwork commissioned to commemorate the association’s milestone in conjunction with the first showing of HACU “Class of 2020: Graduate!” art exhibit featuring artwork by San Antonio area eighth graders. The art exhibit will be on display at HACU’s College and Career Fair, October 30, 2011 in the Lone Star Foyer 2-5 p.m., an event free and open to the public.

Three students whose artwork best captured the theme of the exhibit were presented with scholarships to Our Lady of the Lake University. The scholarship recipients are:

  • Paulina Vasquez, Katherine Stinson Middle School, Northside Independent School District
  • Delaney King, Alamo Heights Junior High School, Alamo Heights Independent School District (Runner-Up)
  • Janelle Martinez, St. Phillips of Jesus Catholic School (Runner-Up)

The art exhibit, designed to raise awareness of the need for youths to envision themselves as college graduates to achieve President Barack Obama’s goal for the United States to once again lead the world in degree attainment by 2020, showcased more than 50 original posters from students from the local San Antonio area.
