"SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Jose Vicente, president of Miami-Dade Community College’s Inter American Campus in Florida, has been elected chair of the Governing Board of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

“We welcome the leadership of Dr. Vicente, a distinguished advocate for Hispanic higher education, as we address issues of critical importance to the college and career success of the nation’s youngest and fastest-growing ethnic group,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio Flores.

“We will rely on his expertise and decades of commitment to increasing higher education access and quality to substantially enhance HACU’s reach and results in the year ahead,” Flores said.

HACU represents more than 315 colleges and universities serving the largest concentrations of Hispanic higher education students in every major state, Puerto Rico and abroad. HACU has won record new federal, corporate and community support for Hispanic higher education in every year since the nonprofit organization was founded in 1986. The HACU National Internship Program is the largest Hispanic college student internship program in the country.

“HACU’s role in the national dialogue is vital as it helps craft higher education policy,” said Vicente, a 28-year veteran of Miami-Dade Community College.

“With current events redefining the roles of our most time-honored institutions, now more than ever, institutions of higher learning have a responsibility to serve in a meaningful capacity in the academic, professional, personal and ethical development of our students for a new age,” Vicente said.

Vicente, who also is a board member of the National Community College Hispanic Council of the American Association of Community Colleges, became the founding president of the six-campus Miami-Dade Community College’s Inter-American Campus in 1997. He has served as a member of the HACU Governing Board since 1998.

Vicente is a board member of the National Community College Hispanic Council. He also is a member of the Minority Resources Commission of the American Association of Community Colleges and the Commission on Leadership and Institutional Development of the American Council on Education.

Miami-Dade Community College annually awards more associate degrees than any other community college in the United States. Miami-Dade’s student enrollment is 64 percent Hispanic.
