Speakers of HACU’s 2012 Annual Conference announced 
 

HACU is announcing several speakers of its Annual Conference taking place at the end of next month at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC.

Mark Shurtleff, Utah’s first three-term attorney general, will be a speaker at the Opening Plenary on Oct. 20, 2012. Raul Yzaguirre, U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, will be a speaker at the International Plenary on Oct. 22.

 

Mildred García, president of California State University, Fullerton will be a speaker at the Town Hall "Corporate Diversity Meets the HSI” on Oct. 22.


Mark Shurtleff, Utah’s first three-term attorney general, will be a speaker at the Opening Plenary on Oct 20. Shurtleff was instrumental in the establishment of the Utah Compact, a statement of principles addressing immigration. He also obtained and defended in-state college tuition for children of undocumented parents as well as driver privilege cards for undocumented immigrants.

Raul Yzaguirre, U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic, will be a speaker at the International Plenary “Connecting the Western Hemisphere through Higher Education” on Oct. 22. Yzaguirre was executive director of the Center for Community Development and Civil Rights at Arizona State University in Phoenix, served as president and CEO of the National Council of La Raza from 1974 to 2004, and on the Presidential Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

Mildred García, president of California State University, Fullerton will be a speaker at the Town Hall "Corporate Diversity Meets the HSI” on Oct. 22. García has served 10 years as a college president at Cal State Dominguez Hills and Berkeley College in New York and New Jersey. She became Cal State Fullerton’s president in June 2012. She is the author of several books and articles focused on the impact of equity in higher education policy and practice, and serves on numerous national boards including President Obama’s Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

Individuals will have until Oct. 5 to register online. Registration is also available for a preconference Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute on Oct. 20 and a post-conference Emerald Gala on Oct. 22 and Dean’s Forum on Oct. 23.
