U.S. Senate passes National HSIs Week Resolution

Senator Robert Menéndez garnered the support of 22 bipartisan cosponsors for resolution S.Res. 568 to recognize the achievements and goals of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) across the United States during the week of September 16, 2012. On Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012, the resolution to designate “National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week” passed the Senate by unanimous consent.

"As Chair of the Senate Democratic Hispanic Task Force, I am proud to once again introduce a resolution that honors the importance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and their immense contributions at the forefront of service to our nation’s largest and fastest-growing racial or ethnic minority group,” said Menendez. “These exemplary institutions serve over half of all Hispanic students and invest in the next generation of Latino leaders, bringing our nation one step closer to achieving educational equity and securing access to a college education for every American.”

Congressman Raúl Grijalva added: “Hispanic-Serving Institutions across our country are strengthening and expanding opportunities in higher education for our next generation of Hispanic leaders. These institutions play an essential role in equipping our students with the skills needed to succeed in America. It is critical and appropriate that we celebrate and recognize the immeasurable contributions HSIs have made to our students, communities and nation.”

Earlier this week President Barack Obama issued a proclamation designating Sept. 16-22 as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) Week.
