HACU Statement on Senate passage of immigration bill

San Antonio, TX – Following is a statement from the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) President and CEO Antonio R. Flores on today’s historic passage by the U.S. Senate of its long-awaited Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) bill, which provides a conditional path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million aspiring citizens.

“We commend the U.S. Senate for passing comprehensive immigration reform legislation, particularly the eight Senators who spearheaded this crucial effort. By providing a roadmap to legal status and citizenship for millions of deserving immigrants, including those brought to the U.S. as minors who see themselves as Americans, the Senate shows the way for the House to pass similar legislation that the vast majority of Americans support. We need this legislation so DREAM students, agricultural workers, STEM professionals, and millions of other hard-working immigrants can have the opportunity to make major contributions to our economic and social advancement.”

With a bipartisan vote of 68-32, the Senate sends a strong message to the House to take up the legislation.   The Senate’s bill includes a strong version of the DREAM Act as well as new funding for STEM education, both of which HACU has strongly supported.
