HACU statement regarding ruling setting back immigration progress for undocumented immigrants

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) denounced the ruling by the Federal District Court for the Southern District of Texas to temporarily suspend the President’s most recent executive action on immigration. The suspension of the program that was set to begin today will impact as many as 270,000 immigrants. Although disappointed, immigrants around the country continued to prepare to file applications optimistic that the ruling will be overturned.

“HACU stands behind the President’s executive action last November to expand Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). We believe he correctly used his Presidential authority and fully support the executive order,” said HACU President and CEO, Antonio R. Flores. “HACU will continue to advocate for undocumented students and immigrants and is hopeful Judge Hanen’s decision will be overturned,” said Flores.

Texas and 25 other states challenged the President’s immigration actions. It is unclear how long the appeals process will take, but it is possible it could be months.
