HACU workshop at CSU Dominguez Hills promotes careers in health disparities research

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) hosted a workshop for university students at California State University, Dominguez Hills to provide information about careers available for health disparities researchers.

Approximately 35 students attended the Hispanic Health Disparities Research Lecture and Training Workshop at the CSU, Dominguez Hills on April 17, 2015.

The workshop included a welcome by Alicia Martinez, senior executive director of international affairs & membership at HACU. Ray Garza, Ph.D., professor of psychology at The University of Texas at San Antonio, gave a presentation on health issues disproportionately affecting the Hispanic community and the need for more students to pursue research careers to address these disparities.

Eloy Rodriguez, Ph.D., James A. Perkins endowed professor in Environmental and Chemical Biology at Cornell University in New York, presented on "How Natural Medicines Control Breast Tumors - A Major Health Disparity."

Workshop participants also had the opportunity to hear from a graduate student research panel.

The HACU workshop is the latest in a series of university workshops offered to address the underrepresentation of Hispanics in health disparities research careers. The workshop is funded through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
