Senate Resolution recognizes Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week, Sept. 14-20

At the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) across the nation are also being recognized. Earlier this week, President Barack Obama designated with a proclamation, the week beginning September 14, 2015, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week.

U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid also introduced a separate bipartisan resolution to designate Sept. 14-20 as "National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week" for the important work, achievements and critical role of these institutions in educating and empowering Latino youth. “The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities thanks the President and the Senate for recognizing the important role the growing number of Hispanic-Serving Institutions and emerging HSIs play in educating the future workforce of this nation,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

Of the 409 HSIs meeting the federal enrollment criterion in 2013, 190 (46%) were public two-year institutions, 81 public four-year institutions, 125 private four-year institutions and 15 private two-year institutions. Combined these institutions enrolled 1,708,391 Hispanics.

Institutions from around the country will be celebrating HSIs Week with various activities on their campuses.
