HACU's Statement on the Announcement of Arne Duncan’s Resignation as U.S. Secretary of Education

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today announced that he will be stepping down from that position in December 2015. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his service to the nation and to Hispanic education over the last six years as Secretary. His September 30 speech at the National Press Club directly addressed the economic, racial and ethnic disparities in access and funding for quality education and serves as only the most recent example of his career-long commitment to educational equity.

HACU is especially grateful for the times he has taken to address and dialogue with our member colleges and universities. We are grateful for his support for the White House Initiative for Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the Administration’s chief outreach to Hispanic education, pre-K to graduate school, and for the lead funding mechanisms for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Title V Parts A and B (undergraduate and post-baccalaureate HSI grant programs, respectively) and Title III Part F (HSI STEM and Articulation grant program).

We wish Secretary Duncan all the best in his future endeavors. We also look forward to working with his announced successor Deputy Secretary of Education John B. King, Jr.
