Statement from Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities on retirement of Congressman Hinojosa

San Antonio, TX – Statement from Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) on the retirement of Congressman Hinojosa.

“In his 19 years in the United States Congress, Rubén Hinojosa has been a voice for institutions with high enrollment of Hispanics and has consistently led the efforts for legislation to strengthen Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Because of the leadership and support of Hinojosa, our HSIs have continued to receive much needed federal funding. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and I thank Congressman Rubén Hinojosa for his exemplary service and especially for being a champion of Hispanic higher education and we wish him all the very best in the future,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

Hinojosa was instrumental in establishing a separate title of the Higher Education Act in 1998 dedicated to the development of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), not-for-profit colleges and universities whose enrollment is at least 25 percent Hispanic. Although funding for competitive grants to HSIs has grown from $12 million to more than $200 million annually, HSIs continue to receive almost a third less federal funding per student than other institutions.
