Statement from HACU on Fisher V. University of Texas Supreme Court decision

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) applauds the U.S. Supreme Court decision on Fisher v. The University of Texas at Austin, which upholds the constitutionality of the university’s race-conscious admissions program. As an amicus curie in support of such a program, HACU is particularly pleased with the court’s decision.

By affirming the findings of the Fifth Court of Appeals on this case, the U.S. Supreme Court drew on the extensive court-case load pertaining affirmative action in college admissions. Today’s decision is a landmark in America’s efforts to advance educational opportunity for historically under-represented populations at selective higher education institutions. HACU commends the U.S. Supreme Court’s fair and balanced decision.

The social and economic impacts of the decision go well beyond enhancing educational opportunity, economic productivity and civic participation of underserved students. Education in an environment reflective of the diversity of American society is critical for all students and essential to our strength as a free nation. This U.S. Supreme Court decision is an important victory for all Americans.
