Panel Discussion on the Implications of the Report by the Commission on the Future of Higher Education Scheduled for October

San Antonio, TX - The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will hold a roundtable discussion Sunday, October 29, 2006, to address the implications of the report by the Commission on the Future of Higher Education.  The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, TX, is the site for this meeting.

Prominent leaders in the education community will be on hand to discuss the way this report will ultimately affect higher education.  Dr. Constantine Curris, President of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, will offer his remarks along with Dr. Manuel Pacheco, Interim President of New Mexico Highlands University, former President of the University of Missouri, the University of Arizona, Laredo State University and the University of Houston-Downtown campus.  With their extensive backgrounds in higher education, they can offer a “real world” perspective on what this report may mean for the future of higher education.

The Honorable Cyndi Taylor Krier, former Texas State Senator and current Vice Chair of the Board of Regents for the University of Texas System, has also been invited.

“The reform of higher education should be priority to everyone,” said Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU.  “The future leaders of this country will be affected by the changes that this report recommends and we need to take an active role to ensure our educational system is changed for the better.”

In July, the Commission on the Future of Higher Education released a draft report which calls for extensive reform to the federal student-aid and accreditation systems, easing the process of transferring credits between institutions, and using testing to measure the "value added" by a college education.  The report also endorsed the creation of a national "unit record" system to track the educational progress of every college student in the United States.

The roundtable discussion will take place during HACU’s 20th Annual Conference, October 28-31.
