Southwest Kicks Off the “Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success”
Travel Award Program Across the Nation

DALLAS, TX—June 18, 2007— Today Southwest Airlines, in conjunction with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), extends the deadline of its annual educational travel award program -- “Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success.”  The deadline has been extended until Friday, June 29, 2006.  In celebration of the program’s third year, Southwest Airlines is increasing the number of roundtrip airline tickets it will award to the winners.  Through this national education initiative, Southwest will provide roundtrip tickets to undergraduate and graduate students across the country with a socio-economic need and who travel away from home to pursue a higher education.  To be eligible, students must apply online at www.hacu.net.  For more information about Southwest, visit http://www.southwest.com/?src=PR_Travel Award_042307.

“We want students to dream big and not let distance hinder their goals of pursuing a higher education at a college that may be far from home,” said Laura Nieto, Southwest Airlines’ Corporate Community Affairs Senior Manager.  “Additionally, we want to keep students connected to those who matter most – ‘la familia' (the family)."

According to HACU, Hispanic students currently account for seven percent of students enrolled at four-year institutions.  Also, a report by the Pew Hispanic Center illustrates the challenges Latino students face in attaining their undergraduate degrees.  They contend attainment levels would improve if students were more willing to travel longer distances to colleges well suited to meet their educational needs.  Because proximity to home continues to be a barrier to achieving educational goals for Latino students, Southwest and HACU are addressing Hispanic college student success while keeping them connected to family.

“HACU is proud to partner with Southwest Airlines for the third year of this incredible program,” said Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU. “As we’ve worked together to bridge the distance between the students and their families – we’ve received heartwarming letters that continue to illuminate the need our students have to include their families in their higher education success."

Travel award recipients will be notified in August 2007.  For more information about the 2007 guidelines for the travel award program, visit: http://www.southwest.com/about_swa/press/college.pdf
