"Eighteen-city WATCHA Tour concert aims for $70,000 in funds raised from ticket sales

GOLDEN, Colo. — The WATCHA Tour 2000 presented by Coors Light is this summer’s hottest Rock en Español concert show and will raise funds in an 18-city tour to benefit Hispanic college students across the United States and Puerto Rico. Fifty cents from every ticket sold on the tour will go to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) CLASE Scholarship Fund. Kicking off August 11 in Los Angeles, the goal of the WATCHA Tour is to raise $70,000 in scholarship funds to be awarded to students this fall.

The CLASE Scholarship

Students at more than 200 HACU-member colleges and universities in the United States and Puerto Rico will be eligible to apply for the $1,000 CLASE Scholarships (Coors Light Academic Success in Education) on behalf of the Coors Light WATCHA Tour 2000 — ‘clase’ meaning class, lesson and of distinction.

“Now through the WATCHA Tour, Coors brings the hottest ‘alterlatino’ music experience to Rock en Español fans everywhere,” said Carlos Soto, director, Corporate Relations, Coors Brewing Company. “Our partnership with HACU and the support of the CLASE Scholarships through the WATCHA Tour allows Coors to deliver the important message of pursuing a higher education for Hispanic students everywhere,” said Soto.

“HACU is excited about the WATCHA Tour 2000 presented by Coors Light and the significant dollars it will raise for scholarships,” said Antonio R. Flores, Ph.D., HACU president and CEO. “Not only will concert-goers hear great music but they will know that 50 cents from their ticket will go to help Hispanic students obtain a college education.”

Applications for the CLASE Scholarship will be available August 14 by calling HACU at (210) 692-3805, visiting HACU's web site at www.hacu.net or picking one up at the financial aid office of HACU-member institutions in WATCHA Tour states. The CLASE Scholarship is open to freshman and continuing college and university students of all majors. Applicants must be enrolled full-time for the fall 2000 semester at a HACU-member college or university in a WATCHA Tour state or Puerto Rico, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (or its equivalent), achieved excellence in academic and extracurricular activities and demonstrate financial need.

The WATCHA Tour 2000

Created last year by Vans Warped Tour producer Kevin Lyman, promoter Daryl Eaton and top Latin rock manager Jorge Mondragón, WATCHA 2000 was expanded this year by adding several cities to the tour, including: Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, New York and Washington, D.C.

The summer’s most innovative tour brings together an eclectic collection of top Latin alternative, rock and hip-hop acts in an 18-city trek across the United States and Puerto Rico beginning August 11 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles and continuing through Labor Day at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

This year’s tour features Grammy-nominated artists Café Tacuba, Molotov, Aterciopelados, Argentinian metal rockers A.N.I.M.A.L. and their countrymen Enanitos Verdes, as well as cultural hybrid Ozomatli. Local, national and international bands will be added to the bill in each city.

The word WATCHA, loosely translated as “check it out,” is a Spanglish combo of “mira” (look) and “watch,” and illustrates the cultural bridge that a show like WATCHA brings to rock and roll. Also, “nos watchamos” is a common Spanglish expression that means “I’ll catch you later” or “I’ll see you later.”
