Mariana Peralta Sharp, a former executive at a nationally known Hispanic family support program, has been named Executive Director of Member Services for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). Sharp will oversee services to member institutions, including collaborative programs and national and international conferences for the nation’s leading Hispanic higher education association, which represents more than 230 colleges and universities with high Hispanic student enrollment rates in the United States, Puerto Rico and abroad.

“Ms. Sharp’s long-standing commitment to the betterment of the larger Hispanic community will serve HACU well in our mission to champion the success of Hispanic higher education students and the campuses that serve them,” said HACU President Antonio Flores.

“Our services to members are key to our role as the leading advocate for the higher education needs of the nation’s fastest-growing minority population. We welcome Ms. Sharp’s expertise,” Flores added.

Sharp is former director of organizational development and human resources at the Avance Inc. Family Support and Education Program, where she helped lead the expansion in Texas and Missouri of the model program for low-income parent education and family support. She also managed human resources for 500 employees and provided marketing and fund-raising support for Avance’s national headquarters in San Antonio, Texas.

“HACU’s conferences, publications and other member services serve as an important platform for promoting the shared needs of our member campuses that are home to two-thirds of all Hispanic higher education students, and for developing strategies that will open more doors to college and career success for what soon will become our nation’s largest minority population,” Sharp said. HACU’s 14th Annual Conference, “Changing the Landscape of Education: Hispanics in the New Century,” is scheduled November 4-7 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. HACU’s 4th International Conference will take place March 4-6, 2001, in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Sharp, who was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, to Cuban exile parents, also is a former newspaper employee magazine editor for The Sacramento Bee, and a former public information officer for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services in Sacramento. Her client roster for project design, research, administrative and promotions support has encompassed the fields of international banking, community newspapers, health care, higher education and manufacturing.

Sharp, who is pursuing both a law degree and master’s degree in public administration at HACU member St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, received her bachelor’s degree in communications and Spanish at the University of Miami and a certificate of graduate studies at the University of California at Davis.
