"WASHINGTON, D.C. -- More than 450 Hispanic college students from throughout the country will gather in Washington, D.C., on June 3, 2000, for the nation’s largest Hispanic college student internship program.

These students will spend 10 weeks this summer as paid interns at federal agency offices in Washington, D.C., and around the country as part of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program. The program is providing professional work experience to students while also directly addressing the lack of Hispanic representation in the federal work force.

Mickey Ibarra, Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, will address HACU National Internship Program students at an opening orientation session at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Holiday Inn and Suites, 625 First Street, Alexandria, Virginia.

A series of other sessions scheduled from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 3 will focus on topics ranging from federal government hiring patterns to the impact of the Hispanic youth vote in the upcoming presidential election.

“The nation’s youngest and fastest-growing minority population remains the only under-represented minority group in federal workforce ranks. We must reverse this situation if our government is to become more representative of our country’s diverse population,” said HACU President Antonio Flores. “The HACU National Internship Program has become a model for how to achieve that goal.”

Hispanics now represent 40 percent of all new labor force entrants, HACU National Internship Program Executive Director William Gil said. “Our program has introduced more than 2,200 Hispanic college students to the federal work environment since 1992, and many of our former interns are now a part of that work force. This program is making a real difference,” Gil said.

HACU represents more than 240 colleges and universities with high Hispanic student enrollment rates in the United States and Latin America.
