HACU Praises Introduction of the DREAM Act in Both Chambers of Congress

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) applauds the introduction of the American DREAM Act by Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) in the House as H.R. 1751 and by Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) in the Senate as S. 729.  HACU is grateful to the Members of Congress who have already signed onto this legislation as cosponsors.

"This bi-partisan legislation would provide thousands of hard-working, talented immigrant youth the opportunity to pursue their dreams and make outstanding contributions to our nation. The DREAM Act is a wise investment in America's future prosperity." said Dr. Antonio Flores, President & CEO of HACU.

The thousands of youth who will benefit from this legislation represent the best and the brightest students in our nation's secondary schools and will be of great importance to the economic recovery of our nation.  Given the opportunity, they stand to make major contributions to the economy, security and social fabric of the nation.

Please contact your Members of Congress in the House and Senate and ask them to cosponsor this legislation and support its passage. (Just click here.) Our active engagement, including stories of student success and future promise, is essential to bring balance to an immigration debate sometimes shaped by fear and stereotypes.

HACU continues working closely with other national organizations and our membership to urge Congress to adopt the DREAM Act in the first session of the 111th Congress.  Updates on this and other legislation of importance to the Hispanic higher education community are available through HACU Member Advisories and at www.hacu.net.
