Flores speaks at Latino College Leadership Summit at GSU

Supporting Latino students is a top priority at Georgia State, which is why the university this weekend will host a summit open to all Latino college students.

The Latino College Leadership Summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday (April 4) in the Urban Life Building, West Exhibit Area. The event is focused on providing resources that will enable Latino college students to develop a leadership path toward success. It is free and open to Hispanic students at GSU, as well as those enrolled at colleges and universities throughout the state.

“In Georgia, we need to identify and nurture young Latino leaders regardless of the college or university they attend; this is an opportunity to make that happen,” Margarita Muñoz, director of GSU’s Office of Latino Student Services and Outreach, a sponsor of the event.

The summit will kick off with a career fair from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. that will include undergraduate and graduate college representatives and non-profit organizations. Antonio Flores, president of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and Juan Andrade, Jr., president of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, will speak to students in the mid-morning.

College students will also have an opportunity to participate in informative workshops in the afternoon such as “How to shine in college, not just survive it,” and, “It’s not who you know, but who knows you,” among others. The summit will conclude with an address by the Honorable Teodoro Maus, former consul general of Mexico in Atlanta.

The summit is sponsored by GSU’s Office of Latino Student Services and Outreach, in partnership with the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies, Latino Student Council, Hispanic Scholarship Fund Student Chapter, Latin American Student Association, Hispanic Bar Student Association and Lambda Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.

Pre-registration is required to ensure attendance. Applications may be requested at lsoassistants@gmail.com or mmunoz@gsu.edu. For more information, call the Office of Latino Services and Outreach at 404-413-2087 or 404-413-2046.
