" It’s about jobs, scholarships and networking

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Hundreds of higher education students from throughout the United States will join Colorado college students at a national conference that will provide them one-stop shopping for jobs, scholarships, and professional development and networking opportunities.

More than 100 corporate and government employers, as well as college and career advisors, will be on hand to meet these students at the 16th Annual Conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) October 26-29 at the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado.

“For college students and recent graduates of every age and ethnicity, this prestigious national gathering each year provides a four-day array of workshops, free Career Fairs, information on the latest college and career trends, personal and professional development workshops, and international education sessions. The conference also provides them a unique opportunity to network with college students from throughout the country,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio Flores.

“Because this year’s conference is in Denver, higher education students from Colorado will have a tremendous opportunity to benefit from an event that will bring employers, advisors, experts and their peers from other colleges and universities to a single, convenient setting,” Flores said. “For time-strapped students facing their future in an unsure economy, HACU’s 16th Annual Conference is an especially timely event that literally will provide a one-stop shopping venue of opportunities to enhance their college and career success.”

Already, telecommunications giant AT&T and other top corporate and federal sponsors are providing scholarships for individual students to attend the Denver conference. Special Student Track workshops are being designed to provide them hands-on expertise on topics ranging from resume preparation to leadership development.

A free Career Fair from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, October 27-28, is open to all Colorado college students and recent graduates. Special networking opportunities will allow Colorado students unique opportunities to meet higher education students from throughout the United States and abroad who will be attending this year’s conference. All conference events will take place at the Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Denver.

As in previous years at annual conferences in cities such as San Antonio, San Diego, Albuquerque, New York, Washington, D.C., Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, many conference sponsors and exhibitors are eager to focus their attention on higher education students in the host state.

The conference also will highlight the HACU National Internship Program. The nation’s largest Hispanic college internship program each year provides hundreds of top college students of every ethnicity paid internships and valuable professional development opportunities at participating corporate and federal agency offices in Washington, D.C., and throughout the United States. For many students, HACU’s annual conferences become their first introduction to the HACU National Internship Program. For many of these students, summer, fall or spring internships later have led to full-time employment.

Conference exhibitors and sponsors have offered students on-the-spot jobs, scholarships and paid internships by conference exhibitors and sponsors. Peer networks established among students representing dozens of higher education institutions at past conferences remain in place today.

As in previous years, HACU’s 16th Annual Conference will also highlight the latest trends and information on Hispanic higher education as part of HACU’s mission to promote the college and career success of the nation’s youngest and largest ethnic population. For students, this translates into a unique opportunity to interact with national leaders, researchers, advocates, peers and role models in Hispanic higher education.

“Something that struck me deeply was seeing so many successful Latinos who were willing to help the rest of us up,” said Rebekah Rosas, a student at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania who attended HACU’s 15th Annual Conference last year in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “That was incredibly empowering,” Rosas said.

“It was inspiring to see how a community comes together and helps each other professionally. We had the chance to meet and interact with people from all over the country while learning how to become better leaders for a near future,” said Maria Castro, a student at Lehman College of the City University of New York who attended last year’s conference.

“We learned very valuable lessons that can never be taught in a classroom,” said Francisco Rodriguez-Carambot, a student at the University of Puerto Rico who attended last year’s conference.

“For networking and making contacts, the conference was ideal,” said Anabel Marquez, a student from Oxnard College in California who attended last year’s conference. “For gaining knowledge and becoming aware of opportunities, the conference was outstanding.”

Registered students, who pay discount student fees, are allowed access to every conference event, including special Student Track workshops and sessions. The daily Career Fair is free to all Colorado higher education students and recent graduates.
