HACU's 8th Annual Latino/a Higher Education Leadership Institute

October 31, Walt Disney World® Resort, FL

HACU’s 8th Annual Latino/a Higher Education Leadership Institute has announced the agenda designed for early-, mid- and top-level faculty, staff, administrators and higher education leaders. Registrations are being accepted for the one-day institute October 31, 2009. 8 am - 4 pm, at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, Walt Disney World® Resort, FL.

The institute will include a series of discussions and panelists providing a forum for dialogue on various aspects of Latino and Latina leadership in higher education. The day will begin with keynote speaker Christine Johnson, Ph.D., of the University of Colorado, Denver, who will discuss the theme “Opportunity Out of Crisis, Latino Higher Education: Thinking Outside the Box.”

A career development and leadership discussion will include a workshop titled “Preparing Ourselves for Effective Higher Ed Leadership,” moderated by David J. Leon, Ph.D., Chair, Dept. of Chicano Studies, California State University-Sacramento.

Roundtable discussions will include the following topics:

·        Student Services Administrative & Leadership Development - Includes discussions on career paths for success and search processes: Application, Search, and Interview.

·        Academic Affairs Administrative & Leadership Development - Includes discussions on career paths for success and search process: Application, Search, and Interview.

·        Pursuing the PhD & EdD – A Key to Advancement in Higher Ed – Deciding to Go For It! – Why do it?; Preparation; Application; Getting Accepted; Now What? Success Strategies: Thriving in Doctoral Study; Completing a Quality Dissertation “On Time.” Everything you ever wanted to know about doctoral committees but were afraid to ask.

·        Special Topic - TBA

A networking lunch will include comments from HACU President and CEO, Antonio Flores.

He will be followed by a panel on “Wise Latinas”: Leading and Succeeding from Outside the Box,” moderated by Thomas R. Martínez, Ph.D., Chair, Dept. of Pub. Pol.& Admin.,  Research presentations on Latina Presidents of Four-Year Institutions, Penetrating the Adobe Ceiling: A Critical View” and “Latina First Year Experience: Factors that Contribute to Persistence from the First to the Second Year in Higher Education” will be part of the panel.  

The Institute will end with a Presidents’ Panel to discuss “Opportunity Out of Crisis, Latino Higher Education: The Leadership Challenge.”
