HACU announces recipients of its Awards of Excellence during Annual Conference

  HACU honors champions of Hispanic success in higher education

HACU announced its 2009 Awards of Excellence during the association’s 23rd Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida, Oct. 31 – Nov. 2, 2009.

 Each year the awards are presented to individuals and organizations that exemplify HACU’s mission of championing Hispanic higher education. The following HACU Awards of Excellence were presented:

  • President’s Award of Excellence was presented to Ed Martinez, Executive Director of Guarantor and Government Solutions for Nelnet, for demonstrating exemplary leadership in advancing HACU’s mission and organizational development.
  • Extraordinary Philanthropic Partner Award was presented to Office Depot Foundation in recognition of outstanding support.
  • Outstanding HACU Member Institution was presented to Valencia Community College, Osceola Campus, in recognition of its extraordinary support of HACU’s mission.  
  • New Public Sector Partner Award was presented to the Naval Sea Systems Command in recognition of its commitment to HACU’s National Internship Program.
  • HACU’s Lifelong Leadership Award was presented to Dr. Max Castillo, one of the founders of HACU who recently retired as president of the University of Houston-Downtown after 17 years.
  • Outstanding HACU Private Sector Partner was awarded to Deloitte in recognition of extraordinary support of HACU’s mission.
  • Outstanding HACU Public Sector Partner was awarded to the Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of excellent support by a government organization.
  • Exemplary International Member Institution was awarded to the Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico.

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) was established in 1986 with a founding membership of 18 institutions. Today, HACU represents approximately 450 institutions committed to Latino/a higher education success in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Latin America, Spain and Portugal.
