Panel to highlight HACU’s history, legacy with international education at International Conference in Puerto Rico

The Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) will host its 9th International Conference, “Building Bridges for Cooperation in International Education,” Feb. 23-25, 2011, at the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, located at 999 Ashford Avenue, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

A special luncheon panel will focus on HACU's historical role within international higher education. The session, titled "The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities and International Education: History, Context and Future,” will take place on Feb. 25, from 1-2:30 p.m., as part of the conference.

Panelists will offer a brief historical background of the international education activities at HACU, and discuss the role of internationalization of universities in the 21st century as well as the future of international education at

ACU and its more than 400 member institutions. The panelists will make their presentations as a tribute to HACU’s silver anniversary being celebrated this year.

Panelists include Dr. Salme Harju Steinberg, president emerita, Northeastern Illinois University, member of the HACU Commission on International Education, and Manuel J. Fernós, president, Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Central Office. Dr. Jorge Iván Vélez-Arocho, vice chair of HACU’s Governing Board and president of Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico will serve as the panel’s convener.
