Remind seniors to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is the key to financial aid; seniors must fill out a FAFSA to be considered for any federal aid, and in some occasions, school aid. The FAFSA collects information regarding family income and other factors to determine your aid eligibility. Nelnet and HACU offer FAFSA assistance.

Aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis so it is important that seniors file the FAFSA as soon after January 1 as possible. Remind them that just because they apply for aid, doesn't mean they have to accept it or the full amount that is offered or awarded to them.

Scholarships should be their first financial aid solution because, unlike student loans, the money doesn't have to be paid back. Scholarships can be awarded based on financial need, academic achievements, talents, or a simple random drawing. Point them to the Nelnet College Planning scholarship search at www.nelnet.net/collegeplanning to locate scholarships they are eligible for.

HACU and Nelnet help students understand the steps to get to college and make the process simple and easy to understand. Nelnet college planning offers resources to students across the country - every step of the way.
