Presidential candidates respond to HACU Platform Issues and Recommendations
Senators Barack Obama, Chris Dodd and John Edwards are the first to respond to HACU's Platform Issues and Recommendations for Presidential Candidates. HACU member institutions have been asked to assist in disseminating the issues document. All HACU supporters are urged to press these platform issues and recommendations at every opportunity available to address presidential candidates, especially with those that have not yet responded (see status of responses).

HACU Conference to highlight Recruitment/Retention of Hispanic Students
Register online for "Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: A National Imperative for the 21st Century," to be held in Chicago, October 20-22, 2007. The conference agenda will feature national and international plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and a lively town hall meeting.  Conference tracks will include:

  • Recruitment and Retention of Hispanic Students
  • Challenges for Hispanic Education
  • Advocacy and Legislation – Higher Education
  • International Higher Education

HNIP 15th Anniversary profiles student success
The 15th anniversary of the HACU National Internship Program was celebrated with a Black tie gala on July 26, 2007. The event included remarks from The Honorable Carlos M. Gutierrez (see video), Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and Congressman Joe Baca, Chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (pictured left). Presentations and acccomplishments by HNIP alumni were the highlights of the evening. More.


Congressman Hinojosa commends HNIP program

During a visit to San Antonio HACU Headquarters, Congressman Rubén Hinojosa was presented with a variety of reports that included an independent analysis released July 26 showing that the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) is an extremely effective tool for the recruitment of Hispanics into the federal workforce. Hinojosa, whose district is home to several of the program’s more than 6,500 interns, commended the association for its work with college students. Roundtrip tickets to be awarded to college students

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and Southwest Airlines hosted the selection committee for the 3rd Annual "Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success," educational travel award program. Committee members (pictured above) gathered on
August 1, 2007, at HACU's national headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, to select the recipients of the flight awards. Through this national educational initiative more than 100 roundtrip tickets are awarded to students with socio-economic need who travel away from home to pursue a higher education. Students will be notified by August 15, 2007. 

The flow of Federal Research Funds - Top 10 TCU, HSIs & HBCUs & Top 20 overall institutions
The National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) latest statistics from the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions show that federal agencies obligated a new high of $28.4 billion to 1,227 academic institutions for science and engineering (S&E) activities in FY 2005. NAEd accepts fellowship applications
The National Academy of Education (NAEd) invites applicants for the following fellowship programs: 2008 National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship Program Deadline: November 9, 2007. Adolescent Literacy Predoctoral Fellowship Program Deadline: December 1, 2007.

Call for proposals
HACU’s partner organization, the Inter American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) is offering HACU-member institutions the opportunity to participate in their calls for proposals for three pilot projects they are creating. The areas are as follows:

  • Capacity Building
  • Continuing Education
  • Governance and Democracy

The Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade and the Spanish Association of Publishers Guilds have developed the campaign America Reads Spanish, aimed at increasing the use and reading of Spanish through libraries, schools and book stores.
