HACU Applauds Swift Passage of HR 2669 The Conference Report for the College Cost Reduction and Access Act, HR 2669, was adopted in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives and is expected to be signed by the President. HR 2669 will provide $20 billion to boost financial assistance to low-income and middle-income students, make landmark investments in Hispanic and Minority-Serving Institutions, particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields, and increase resources to key educational programs such as Upward Bound. Federal employment, education for Hispanics discussed Senators Hillary Clinton and Joseph R. Biden Jr., discuss their views on diversity in the federal sector, quality pre-school programs, and higher education funding for HSIs as part the HACU Platform Issues and Recommendations. Videoconference - "Grant Strategies to Increase Minority STEM Graduates," will be hosted by the U.S. Department of Education, Participants will learn how the Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program (MSEIP) grant can help increase enrollment, retention, and graduation of minorities majoring in the STEM fields. The video conference is scheduled for re-broadcast on Sept. 20, 2007 between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. (EST). Interested participants should provide a 2-hour availability option and send contact information for off-site videoconference; please include contact name, e-mail, and phone number. The U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will host a free technical assistance and capacity building workshop for Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) entitled, “Creating a Presence” on September 24-27, 2007, Renaissance Dallas Hotel, 2222 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas, Texas. The workshop will focus on federal agency partnership opportunities available for grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and internships. The Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers is an international fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit directly from access to the collections at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library – including academics, independent scholars, and creative writers (novelists, playwrights, poets). The Center appoints 15 Fellows a year for a nine-month term at the Library, from September through May. In addition to working on their own projects, the Fellows engage in an ongoing exchange of ideas within the Center and in public forums throughout the Library. Application deadline is Sept. 28, 2007. Fellowships in the Social Sciences and Humanities The Woodrow Wilson International Center for scholars awards approximately 20-25 residential fellowships annually to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues. Topics and scholarship should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illuminate policy issues of contemporary importance. Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with USAID, is issuing a request for applications for Uganda: Parliamentary Research and Internship Program (PRIP). HED and USAID/Uganda anticipate making one (1) award of up to $400,000 for a three-year higher education partnership. The overall goal of the partnership is increase the capacity of the Ugandan partner institution(s) to train and support interns (undergraduate and/or graduate students) from local universities to work with parliamentary committees and caucuses. Summer University 2007 – "Governance and Leadership: Between concept and practice" seeks participants. The Organization of American States, the College of the Americas of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education, and the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja have jointly organized a leadership event for doctoral students and faculty members. The leadership event will take place at the IOHE’s XV Biennial Conference scheduled for Nov. 7-13, 2007 in Loja, Ecuador. Applications are currently being accepted for 40 doctoral students or faculty members, between the ages of 25 and 35. Please note that printed materials and the conference itself will be in Spanish.
