Flores listed among Top 25 Latinos in Education
The Sept./Oct. issue of Latino Leaders magazine, features Antonio R. Flores, president and CEO of HACU, among the Top 25 Latinos in Education. Congratulations to all the Latino Leaders recognized, including current HACU board members: Modesto A. Maidique; President of Florida International University, Tessa Martínez Pollack President of Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, Texas; and José Jaime Rivera, HACU Board Chair and President of University of the Sacred Heart, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Town hall to be broadcast live on HITN
HACU's town hall meeting will be broadcast live by HITN on Monday, October 13, 3:30-5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) as the "HITN Destination Casa Blanca 2008 Special on Hispanic Higher Education." Democratic and Republican presidential candidates have been invited, along with a panel of HACU-member presidents. Attendees and viewers will be encouraged to visit hacu.net to e-mail presidential candidates, advocating on behalf of HSIs and Hispanic higher education.  The program will focus on key HACU Presidential Platform Issues, including:

  • Federal funding gap between HSIs and non-HSIs
  • Inclusion of HSIs in federal statutes and regulations focused on higher education
  • Gap in federal employment of Hispanics

 Seeking accounting majors for paid internships
Accounting majors are in high demand for summer paid internships available through the HACU National Internship Program. Early application deadline is this Friday, October 3. For other deadlines or to download a brochure, visit Student News.

HSIs win $5.9 million in HUD grants
HACU applauds the awarding of $5.9 million in grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to 11 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). The competitive grants were awarded to HSIs in California, New Mexico, New York, Puerto Rico, Texas and Washington to help rehabilitate low-income neighborhoods and offer new educational and community development opportunities through HUD’s Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) Program. HACU testifies in support of S2920, the Minority Entrepreneurship and Innovation Pilot Program
HACU President and CEO, Antonio R. Flores recently submitted testimony for a hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship focusing on “Business Start-up Hurdles in Underserved Communities: Access to Venture Capital and Entrepreneurship Training.”  The hearing took place on September 25, 2008, in the nation’s capital. International Initiatives are focus of discussion

(L-R)  Dr. Alvaro Romo, HACU Associate VP for Programs, Services and International Affairs, recently welcomed Lic. Carlos Cendejas Contreras, President of the Governing Board of the Universidad Insurgentes from Mexico at HACU’S Headquarters in San Antonio, Texas. Discussions during the visit focused on international initiatives.

More broadcast air dates announced

Eight HACU-member institutions are being  showcased nationwide on the “Know Your Heritage -- Hispanic College Quiz Show” series airing during Hispanic Heritage Month and through Nov. 9, 2008. New broadcast dates have been added to the program list. For video clip and program schedule click here.

Oct. 14 - Online registration deadline - AAMC Minority Student Medical Career Awareness Workshops and Recruitment Fair
San Antonio, Texas. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) hosts a free annual career fair for students interested in medical careers held during the AAMC annual meeting. By attending, you can find out about the AAMC's Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), other summer enrichment programs, summer undergraduate research programs, and additional resources that can help you prepare for a career in the health professions.

Oct. 15 - Application deadline - The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the second largest Institute at the National Institutes of Health, is seeking applicants for its Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program, which provides an invaluable opportunity for students with strong academic standing who are from populations underrepresented in biomedical research.

Early Nov. - Application deadline - Fellowship - The National Science Foundation 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition is open to students in their early stages of pursuing a research based Master's or PhD degree. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) offers funding for 3 years of graduate support worth over $122,500.

Nov. 3 - Application deadline - Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), anticipates making at least two awards of up to $450,000 each for three-year partnerships as part of the US-Mexico Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships (TIES) Initiative. The awards will provide higher education support for legal reforms in Mexico.

Nov 13 Application deadline - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is awarding 10 grants for Brownfields training, research, and
technical assistance projects
with national scope and impact. More than $1.5million in funding will support brownfields assessment, cleanup, and revitalization across the country.

Nov. 15 - Application deadline- Fellowship - The National GEM Consortium and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has a joint GEM-ASEE fellowship position available to help develop one or more college-level online introductory engineering courses for an existing Web site that provides free educational resources for third-world countries and across the globe. The fellowship will be assigned to the ASEE headquarters in Washington, DC, during the summer of 2009.
