HACU scholarships available to college students HACU has announced the HACU Scholarship Program for the 2008-09 academic year. A total of more than $350,000 will be awarded to eligible students who demonstrate a financial need, meet program criteria, and attend a HACU-member institution at the time scholarship awards are made. Scholarship information and online application is available here. Deadline for applications and supporting documentation is May 23, 2008. Scholarships awards will be made in August. U.S. Department of Education to host technical assistance workshop
HACU's 13th Annual National Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education, will be held April 13-15, 2008 in Washington, D.C. A post-forum workshop will be hosted by The U.S. Department of Education. The Technical Assistance Workshop will be related to the $200 million designated for HSIs under the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 (CCRAA). A single competition this year is expected to award two-year grants for proposals that address Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) education and articulation programs. Approximately $1 million each year is designated for both FY 2008 and 2009. The workshop will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 9 am–noon at The Madison Hotel, Washington, D.C. (Registration for Capitol Forum is not required).

2008 call for applications
 The DHHS-HACU Professions Capacity Building Program is currently accepting applications to its program focused on developing the grant writing skills and knowledge of faculty participants. The program is intended to strengthen the capacity of HSIs to secure and retain funding for biomedical and health services research, and other sponsored programs. Through grants administration training of faculty and staff participants, the program intends to provide institutions with more information about post-award management and institutional compliance.
Program participants complete an online course and attend three technical workshops. The summer workshops will be held in San Antonio, TX, and also in Bethesda, MD. Travel and lodging expenses will be paid and participants receive a stipend upon completing all portions of the program. The online application and required documents are due no later than April 18, 2008. More.
Seeking students for TV series “Know Your Heritage: Hispanic College Quiz”
The Hispanic College Quiz is a half hour quiz show that will feature Hispanic college students answering a series of multiple-choice questions from the book “A History of Latinos in America – Harvest of Empire” by Juan Gonzalez. The objective of the quiz show series is to generate a high level of excitement and enthusiasm by featuring Hispanic college students from around the country showcasing their knowledge of Hispanic history.
The program will air across the country during Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15, 2008. Five students and one coach will be flown, at the expense of Central City Productions, to Chicago Friday, April 4th to participate in the television taping on April 5th, 2008. Students and coaches will also be provided with hotel accommodations, per diems, ground transportation, six copies of the book “A History of Latinos in America – Harvest of Empire,” and a study guide. Students will have the opportunity to win scholarships toward their current college education. Central City Productions is signing up the first eight schools (and two alternate schools) that commit to participate in the quiz show series.
