HACU-CLIC Advocacy Summit to be held in California
“The Year of Education Reform: Latino Priorities” advocacy event, co-sponsored by the HACU Western Regional Office and the California Chicano-Latino Intersegmental Convocation (CLIC) will take place on April 22-23, 2008 in Sacramento, CA. The joint policy summit and advocacy day is designed to bring together administrators, faculty and staff of California’s higher education community with public policymakers, non-profit partners, and corporate and philanthropic representatives to develop policy action steps for higher education in the state. HSI Leaders Appeal For Increased Funding Attendees at the HACU Capitol Forum on Monday heard from a variety of speakers and received briefings on the association’s legislative agenda. For fiscal 2009, which begins Oct. 1, HACU is requesting $175 million for the Title V HSI program under the Higher Education Act. More from the article published on Diverse Online.
HACU call for conference papers Proposals are currently being accepted for the 22nd Annual Conference: “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: Strengthening the Nation's Prosperity and Opportunity,” to be held in Denver, Colorado, October 11-13, 2008. Conference tracks include: Grants and Funding Opportunities; Partnering for Progress; Recruiting, Retaining and Graduating Hispanic Students; and Advocacy and Legislation. The deadline for submission of proposals is April 21, 2008, 5 pm CDT. More.
Students can apply for free air travel awards
Applications are now being accepted for the 4th Annual "Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success" travel award program sponsored by Southwest Airlines and the HACU. Through this national education initiative, Southwest will provide roundtrip airline tickets to undergraduate and graduate students across the country with socio-economic need who travel away from home to pursue a higher education. IPEDS Training - registration underway
Two Workshops on the use of IPEDS data for institutional research will be held on Friday, October 10, 2008, at the Community College of Denver on the Auraria Campus. The morning session (9 a.m.-noon) will consists of an introduction to the use of the IPEDS Data tool: Peer Analysis System (PAS). The afternoon session (1-4 p.m.) will cover two topics: Advanced Peer Analysis System (PAS) and Dataset Cutting Tool (DCT). The cost will be $90 for each session. More. Colorado sightseeing tours - Annual Conference
Colorado Convention Associates will be offering sightseeing tours during unscheduled event times at HACU’s 22nd Annual Conference. The tours are ideal for individuals planning to arrive early or planning to stay beyond the conference dates. A $10 refundable deposit will serve as an individual space reservation per tour. HACU Scholarship deadline approaching College students, it's not too late to apply for The HACU Scholarship Program for 2008-09 academic year. Scholarships will be awarded to eligible students who demonstrate financial need, meet program criteria, and who attend a HACU-member institution at the time the scholarship awards are made. Hobsons and HACU partner on Hispanic School District Guide Hobsons, a leader in Hispanic college-bound student publishing will partner with HACU to produce a college guide specifically for Hispanic students in southern California. The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities High School District Guide – California Edition, will be released in 2009, and will be a helpful publication to California Hispanic high school students. The University of A Coruña seeks partner institutions The University of A Coruña, one of HACU’s member institutions in Spain, is looking to partner with U.S. colleges and universities to create student exchange opportunities. The University of A Coruña has approximately 25,000 students enrolled in its 25 schools that include degree programs at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels. The University also has a broad experience in coordinating international programs and providing support services for visiting students. Announcements and Opportunities 2009 HHMI Early Career Scientist Competition - The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is pleased to announce a national competition to select as many as 70 outstanding early career scientists. HHMI seeks scientists in all areas of basic biological and biomedical research, and in areas of chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering that are directly related to biology or medicine. A prospective applicant must indicate his or her intention to apply by April 30, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, via an electronic application available at the HHMI website. More. Dillard University will host the three-day event in New Orleans – May 12-15, 2008. More. The U.S. Department of State and IREX (the International Research & Exchanges Board) announce an open-competition for U.S. universities to design and host a semester-long professional development program for up to 20 secondary-level teachers of English as a Foreign Language, social studies, civics, mathematics and science for the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP). Seeking college poll workers - The U.S. Election Assistance Commission's grant program is currently recruiting college poll workers.
