2008 HACU Annual Conference agenda released
HACU is pleased to announce the agenda for HACU’s 22nd Annual Conference,"Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: Strengthening the Nation's Prosperity and Opportunity," which will take place October 11-13, 2008, in Denver, Colorado. HNIP announces 2009 deadlines
The HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) has announced its program dates for 2009. Fall application deadlines have already closed, however the early application deadline to be considered for a summer internship requiring security clearance or internships with some companies is Oct. 3, 2008. Deadline for spring internships is Nov. 7, 2008. The ten-and fifteen-week intern assignments provide college students with work experience and include paid round-trip airfare, housing arrangement assistance, emergency medical insurance, and a weekly stipend. Federal agency interns also receive an orientation in Washington, D.C and participate in a range of professional development, social, and cultural activities. More

Hispanic education facts released
Last week, The US Census Bureau released statistical facts about Hispanics. Below are facts related to education:

  • 60% of Hispanics 25 and older had at least a high school education in 2007, compared with 86% of all adults.
  • 13% of the Hispanic population 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher in 2007, compared with 52% of Asians, 32% of non-Hispanic whites and 19% of blacks.
  • 3.3 million Hispanics 18 and older had at least a bachelor’s degree in 2007, up from 1.7 million a decade earlier. 
  • 811,000 Hispanics 25 and older had advanced degrees in 2007 (e.g., master’s, professional, doctorate).
  • 11% of all college students in October 2006 were Hispanic. Among elementary and high school students combined, the corresponding proportion was 19 percent.

Educational attainment levels are higher among certain Hispanic groups than among others. For example, among Cubans 25 and older, 75 percent were at least high school graduates, and 26 percent had a bachelor’s degree or higher. The Fact Sheet is available here

Deadline next week for design competition
Five college students will have a chance to receive $1,000 to $5,000 in scholarships, show their design skills and also walk a fashion runway during a student track event at HACU’s 22nd Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado, Oct. 11-13, 2008. It's all part of the Design Your Future/Diseña Tu Futuro competition presented by HACU and Gap Inc. Students at HACU-member institutions enrolled in a fashion apparel design program may apply online. A suit design and supporting documentation must be submitted by the extended deadline of July 25, 2008.

House hires its first Hispanic Reading Clerk
Jaime Zapata, communications director for the Small Business Committee, was recently hired as the new Reading Clerk for the House of Representatives. He begins his new position on July 28 and is the first Hispanic to hold this high-profile position.

Congressman Joe Baca, Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, applauded the appointment. “It is a historic moment for Hispanics across the country, as they will now have a sense of pride when they tune in to C-SPAN and see someone from our community playing an integral part in the proceedings of the United States Congress,” said Baca in a written announcement.

New executive director named to the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at UT Austin
Dr. Octavio N. Martinez Jr., a professor and clinical psychiatrist with experience in finance and banking, is the first Hispanic to be appointed executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at The University of Texas at Austin.

"Dr. Martinez brings an unusual and impressive combination of experience and education that will complement and support the foundation's mission to improve mental health in Texas," said Dr. Gregory Vincent, vice president for diversity and community engagement at the university. The foundation is part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement.

Martinez is licensed to practice medicine in Texas and in North Carolina and is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. More.

Universidad de Negocios ISEC seeking to partner with member institutions
Universidad de Negocios ISEC, one of HACU’s member institutions in Mexico, is looking to partner with U.S. colleges and universities to create a dual degree program. Universidad de Negocios ISEC has been educating Mexico’s youth for over 54 years and offers degree programs in Business Administration, International Business, Public Accounting, Finance, Law, Marketing and Tourism, among several other degree programs. Early Bird registration underway for Joint International Conference
HACU, IOHE, and CONAHEC will hold for the first time a joint international conference that will be historical in bringing together the voices of 1,000 universities throughout the huge intercontinental region from Canada to Chile and Argentina. The International Conference will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico April 22-24, 2009. Register today – Early Bird Deadline January 31, 2009. More.

Minority Institutions focus of Head Start Training Grants
The Administration for Children and Families offers funds under the Career Advancement Partnership program to help eligible minority institutions develop curricula that can be used to improve instruction to Head Start students, as well as increase the number of associate, baccalaureate and even graduate degrees earned by Head Start personnel. Competition is open only to Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions (those whose full-time student populations are at least 25% Hispanic) and Tribal College and Universities. In each category, 2-5 grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded. For HSIs who submitted letters of intent, applications are due July 28. The RFP is available at Head Start RFP.

"Creating a Presence," a free technical assistance and capacity-building workshop for Minority-Serving Institutions, will take place Sept. 22-25, 2008, at the InterContinental Hotel Dallas. Information will be provided about partnerships and funding opportunities with federal agencies. Request and return a completed registration form by Sept. 15. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences
Foundation 2008 Faculty Seminar is accepting applications. The Seminar is open to  professors, chairs, deans and instructors and will take place Nov 11 –15 in Los Angeles. There is no seminar fee. Twenty fellows will be selected to participate in five days of discussions, presentations and interactions with major studios, production companies, the networks and their top production and programming people. The National Science Foundation invites applicants for the 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition. This program offers up to 3 years of graduate school support worth over $120,000 to each awardee - last year 913 awards were granted. Benefits include a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 annual cost of education allowance, a one time $1,000 travel allowance, and access to TeraGrid supercomputing facilities. U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents at or near the beginning of their graduate study seeking research-based Master’s and/or PhD degrees in NSF-supported science (including social science and psychology) and engineering disciplines are eligible to apply. The application process is expected to open in August 2008 and close early November 2008.Visit www.nsfgradfellows.org.
