HEA Reauthorization a great leap forward for Hispanics Special thanks go out to all who have supported HACU’s HEA agenda. As reported in HACU’s Member Advisory, the July 31 passage of the Higher Education Act (HEA) Reauthorization by Congress will significantly advance opportunities for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). HACU meets with Chinese Embassy
As worldwide attention is focused on the Beijing Olympics, HACU President Dr. Antonio Flores (left) met August 13, 2008, in Washington, D.C., with Dr. You Shaozhong, Minister Counselor of the Education Office of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the USA, to discuss creating partnerships to encourage student and faculty exchanges between Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and colleges and universities in China. Follow up is being planned between the Embassy and HACU's International Affairs office. Read more>>
Flores meets with HUD
Antonio Flores, President of HACU, Secretary Steve Preston and Assistant Secretary Williams of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development met recently in Washington D.C. to explore possible collaborative opportunities between HUD and HACU. At their August 5 meeting, Dr. Flores and Secretary Preston discussed HACU's recommendations for increases in the HUD budget to support the Hispanic-Serving Institutions Assisting Communities grant program and to restore the HUD Hispanic-Serving Institution Work-Study Program. They also explored other funding opportunities as well as the placement of HACU interns at HUD in the future. Read more>>
70 students to fly for free to their colleges this fall On Monday, Southwest Airlines, in conjunction with HACU, announced the winners of "Lánzate," its annual educational travel award program. With more than 450 entries from all across the country, winners were selected on July 24 after intensive evaluation from a panel of judges comprised of college professors and professionals from coast to coast. The 70 exemplary students chosen will receive free travel to any of the 64 cities Southwest Airlines serves. See news release to download a list of winners. Read more>>
College students earn while they learn Back-to-School for Jay Garcia means he’s returning to college with some cash in his pocket and practical experience in business-marketing thanks to a corporate internship at the Healthcare division of Sodexo in Portage, Michigan. Garcia, a student at Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi, was among more than 400 students selected to participate in the The HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) this summer. Other 2008 Announcements and Opportunities August 15 - October 15 - Application period for The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the second largest Institute at the National Institutes of Health is seeking applicants for its Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program, which provides an invaluable opportunity for students with strong academic standing who are from populations underrepresented in biomedical research. September 22-25 - "Creating a Presence" Technical Assistance/Capacity Building Workshop for Minority Serving Institutions. October 1 - Application deadline - Fellowships - Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars awards approximately 20-25 residential fellowships annually to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues. Topics and scholarship should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illuminate policy issues of contemporary importance.
October 15-18 - The 5th Annual ALAS Conference Individuals interested in making a presentation can download the submission form online. Deadline for submissions is August 30.
Early November application deadline - Fellowship - The National Science Foundation 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition is open to students in their early stages of pursuing a research based Master's or PhD degree. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) offers funding for 3 years of graduate support worth over $122,500.
November 15 deadline- Fellowship - The National GEM Consortium and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has a joint GEM-ASEE fellowship position available to help develop one or more college-level online introductory engineering courses for an existing web site that provides free educational resources for third-world countries and across the globe. The fellowship will be assigned to the ASEE headquarters in Washington, DC, during the summer of 2009. Prior to this time, the fellow will be expected to gather course materials from ASEE-member (and other) professors, and propose outlines for one or more courses. A technical background in electrical, materials, mechanical, aerospace, civil, or related engineering fields is a plus. M.S. program applicants (preferred) and Ph.D. program applicants should apply the fellowship module.
