HACU to partner with DOL on Opportunity Conference

HACU will partner with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to present the Sixth Annual Opportunity Conference on Oct. 23, 2008. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao will host the conference that will take place in Orlando, Florida. The conference is free. Read more>>

2008 Hispanic Policy Agenda released 
The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) released its 2008 Hispanic Policy Agenda. HACU is among the 26 national and regional Hispanic organizations that are part of NHLA and contributed to the agenda. HACU participated on the subcommittees on education and government accountability. Read more>>

HNIP fall semester kicks off
The HACU National Internship Program (HNIP) kicked off the fall semester by welcoming 91 students from colleges and universities nationwide (see list below). Internship placements include 66 participants located in Washington, D.C., and 25 in field offices nationwide.

Reception held for DHHS-HACU participants
Faculty in the fields of biology, social sciences and allied health programs with an interest in health disparities, along with research staff, were among attendees at a farewell reception for the 10th Annual DHHS-HACU Professions Capacity Building Program. The reception took place on Aug. 23, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU, presented certificates of completion to program participants. Read more>>

2008 Announcements and Opportunities 

Oct. 1 - Application deadline - Fellowships - Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars awards approximately 20-25 residential fellowships annually to individuals with outstanding project proposals in a broad range of the social sciences and humanities on national and/or international issues. Topics and scholarship should relate to key public policy challenges or provide the historical and/or cultural framework to illuminate policy issues of contemporary importance.

Oct 1 - Application deadline - American Councils has opportunities for U.S. institutions to host participants of the Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP) for the 2009 spring semester. To apply to host JFDP fellows, please complete the online application form found here. The application deadline is October 1, 2008. 

Oct. 15 - Application deadline - The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the second largest Institute at the National Institutes of Health, is seeking applicants for its Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities program, which provides an invaluable opportunity for students with strong academic standing who are from populations underrepresented in biomedical research.

Early Nov. - Application deadline - Fellowship - The National Science Foundation 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition is open to students in their early stages of pursuing a research based Master's or PhD degree. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) offers funding for 3 years of graduate support worth over $122,500.

Nov. 3 - Application deadline - Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), anticipates making at least two awards of up to $450,000 each for three-year partnerships as part of the US-Mexico Training, Internships, Exchanges, and Scholarships (TIES) Initiative. The awards will provide higher education support for legal reforms in Mexico.

Nov. 15 - Application deadline- Fellowship - The National GEM Consortium and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has a joint GEM-ASEE fellowship position available to help develop one or more college-level online introductory engineering courses for an existing Web site that provides free educational resources for third-world countries and across the globe. The fellowship will be assigned to the ASEE headquarters in Washington, DC, during the summer of 2009.
