HACU announces new governing board members HACU recently inducted four new members to serve on its Governing Board and elected new Governing Board officers at HACU’s Annual Conference. The new board members, who will serve three-year terms effective October 2008, are: - Ana “Cha” Guzman, Ph.D., president of Palo Alto College, located in San Antonio, TX. - Elsa Murano, Ph.D., president of Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. - David Schmidly, Ph.D., president of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. - Also, serving on the Governing Board as chair of HACU’s Corporate and Philanthropic Council is Raymond Arroyo, Chief Diversity Officer of Aetna (headquartered in Hartford, CT), one of the nation's leading diversified health care benefits companies. HACU-member president on Obama's team President-elect Barack Obama has tapped University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College President Juliet V. Garcia to serve on his transition team.
"I consider public service to be our highest calling; so I am greatly honored to have been invited to take part in the historic transition of our young democracy," Garcia said in a written statement to The Brownsville Herald. Read more>>
McCain and Obama education platforms and HACU seven-point solutions presented to 400 Latino students and academic community HACU recently partnered with The Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network (HITN) on a Town Hall meeting calling attention to an impending crisis that soon will impact the nation’s ability to compete in a global economy – the academic achievement of Latinos. The forum, “Hispanic Higher Education,” aired live to 33 million viewers nationwide from HACU’s 22nd Annual Conference and can be viewed online at the HITN website. Read more>>
HACU submits HSACU recommendations The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) formal Recommendations for Rules and Regulations Implementing HSACU Provisions in the Reauthorized Farm Bill. Fashion design students awarded scholarships Five finalists from the Design Your Future/Diseña Tu Futuro competition presented by HACU and Gap Inc had the opportunity to walk a fashion runway and earn scholarship funds earlier this month. Grant Announcement - The NRC Nuclear Education Grant Program’s primary purpose is supporting and developing the educational infrastructure necessary to allow the nation to safely move its nuclear energy initiatives forward. The program promotes and strengthens teaching programs in nuclear safety, nuclear security, nuclear environmental protection, and other fields that the Commission determines to be critical to the NRC’s regulatory mission by enhancing curricula and increasing faculty teaching competencies at higher education institutions. Grant Announcement - The FOA issued by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes on Health, encourages Research Project Grant (R24) applications from institutions that historically and/or currently serve students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds that aim to increase their capacity to conduct drug abuse and addiction research. The applications should propose to foster the research career development of a diverse cadre of faculty, students and staff who are currently underrepresented in drug abuse research, and to enhance research infrastructure at the institution.
