Statement on Hurricane Ike

San Antonio, TX: The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) would like to express their concern for everyone affected by Hurricane Ike, especially to its member institutions and their learning communities across east Texas and beyond. “As we watched in disbelief on TV the forces of nature assault the Gulf of Mexico coastal areas, we were hoping the impact would be much less than anticipated. We are aware that the lack of power and other infrastructure services, especially transportation and communications, may delay the restart of operations at numerous colleges and universities,” Antonio Flores, HACU’s President & CEO, stated.

HACU will attempt to ascertain the impact of the hurricane on its member institutions as soon as possible to better assess how we might be able to assist them. Flores assigned a special staff team over the weekend to work on this priority project. An action plan is expected this afternoon for immediate implementation.

HACU responded in the aftermath of Katrina in 2005 with important results for affected institutions. Although the damage caused by Ike is not expected to be as severe, the lessons learned from Katrina will guide HACU’s actions this time.

“We will keep our membership informed as appropriate of HACU’s findings, proposed actions, and possible ways of assisting member institutions in need,” added Flores.

Below is a list of colleges and universities in the area that may have been affected. The list below may not be comprehensive, but includes institutions *impacted by Hurricane Ike and those that were **impacted by Hurricane Ike and are HACU-member institutions.
