Title V Eligibility Process Announced The U.S. Department of Education has announced that the FY 2009 “Request for Designation as an Eligible Institution for Title III and Title V Programs, and Request for a Waiver of the Non-Federal Cost Share Requirement” is now available. For more information and a link to the form, click here. (There is also a link on that page to the official Federal Register announcement.) The request for designation as an eligible HSI is due February 20, 2009.
HSIs must be certified in this part of the process to be eligible to compete in the Title V grant application processes (this year in both the undergraduate program and a new graduate education program) which will be announced later this spring.
HACU alumni join National Day of Service activities
On the eve of the historic presidential inauguration, the HACU Alumni Association and the CHCI Alumni Association partnered to participate in Monday's National Day of Service, on MLK Day.
The organizations joined the DC Fire Department in a city-wide food drive. The food drive will benefit the Capitol Area Food Bank to aid local families in need. (L-R: Edward Lyles, Safeway Manager, Mabel Cao, Cristina Diaz, Jeffrey Zelaya, Safeway Manager, Brendan Kaye)
Flores takes part in inaugural celebrations Antonio Flores, HACU president & CEO, served on the Honorary Host Committee for the 2009 Latino Inaugural Celebration, an event that celebrated the Latino community's participation in the 2008 U.S. Presidential Elections, and that served as a tribute to the grassroots activism and mobilization of millions of Latinos to elect Barack Obama as the country's 44th President. The Celebration took place on Monday, Jan. 19, in the Hall of the Americas at the Organization of American States headquarters in Washington, D.C. HACU announces 2009 HACU-DHHS Professions Capacity Building Program Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are encouraged to submit applications to participate in the summer 2009 HACU/United States Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Professions Capacity Building Program. The purpose of the program is to increase the participation of HSIs and entry-level faculty in grant development efforts that will improve the health status of Hispanics and other minority populations, including disease prevention and health promotion activities. The program is designed to expand federal health care grant and contract opportunities at your campuses. Read More>>
"A Class Apart" to premiere on PBS on Feb 23 On February 23, 2009, people around the country will gather to watch A Class Apart on PBS’s “American Experience” (check local listings). In living rooms and auditoriums, in dorm rooms and cultural centers, they’ll meet the group of Mexican American attorneys who changed history in 1954.

Whittier College Community Mourns Loss of 'El Jefe' Martin Ortiz Martin Ortiz, who served Whittier College for more than 40 years and who founded and directed Whittier College's Center of Mexican American Affairs, died January 12.
Ortiz's dedication to bettering the lives of students and to educational excellence has left a permanent mark on the College.
"He was a pioneer in the promotion and operation of programs geared to helping Latinos move on to college and succeed," said Antonio Flores, president of HACU.

Universidad de Alcalá -"Teach and Learn In Spain Program" The "Teach and Learn in Spain Program" has scholarships available to study for a "Master en Enseñanza de la Lengua, Literatura y Cultura en el Mundo Hispánico" or a "Master in Bilingual and Multicultural Education." Application Deadline is Feb. 25. The program includes a teaching internship at a school within the Community of Madrid. Students will teach English conversational classes while receiving a monetary compensation. The "Teach and Learn in Spain Program" is offered by Universidad de Alcalá, Spain, and provides students with the opportunity to live, study, and teach in Spain for a year while gaining teaching experience. Scholarships cover cost of tuition, insurance, and monetary compensation to help participants with room and board. USDA E. (KIKA) De La Garza Fellowship Program Application deadline: Jan. 30 The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) E. (Kika) de la Garza Fellows Program offers faculty and staff from HSIs the opportunity to work collaboratively with USDA to gain insight and understanding of the federal government. This uniquely tailored experience brings together HSI staff and federal executives to address the spectrum of challenges faced in the development of a well-prepared Hispanic workforce. Fellows spend two to four weeks in Washington, D.C., to increase their understanding of USDA and other federal agencies, particularly at the national level, and be able to identify mutual collaborative interests.
Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program University host application due Jan. 31 Boost your internationalization efforts by hosting a Muskie fellow. The 2009-10 fellowship will provide for 141 of Eurasia's most talented graduate students and professionals to pursue masters level study in the US. The program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and administered by IREX.

The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency grant competition Application deadline Feb. 23 - for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence (IC CAE) Program.
