Clinton Global Initiative - April 3 deadline announced to apply for grants
The University of Texas at Austin recently hosted the Second Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) Meeting. HACU’s Director of Capacity Building and Leadership, Arturo Cuéllar, Jr. (pictured with President Clinton), represented HACU at the meeting. HACU’s commitment is for college students to tutor/mentor in PK-12 Schools. The goal is to strengthen collaboration between the two systems through tutoring and mentoring to increase Hispanic higher education success. HACU’s commitment is being coordinated by Maria Elena Vivas-House, mevivas-house@hacu.net
President Clinton announced the Outstanding Commitment Awards 42 awards from $1,000 to $25,000 apiece will be made. Students can apply until April 3, 2009. More>>

Five college students will have a chance to receive a scholarship,demonstrate their design skills, and walk a fashion runway during a student track event at HACU’s 23rd Annual Conference taking place at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, Walt Disney World®, FL, October 31-November 2, 2009. More>>
"Take the Lead" - find a mentor - Apply by March 20 HACU is a partnering with Sí TV on the "Take the Lead” mentorship program. This mentor program is designed to give students access to successful Latino community and business leaders. Students selected will receive hands-on training, networking tips and guidance to help them achieve their career goals. Sign up for this opportunity of a lifetime and receive guidance from respected and influential mentors. Students selected will be featured on Sí TV. HACU-DHHS Professions Capacity Building Program - - Deadline: April 17 HACU-DHHS Professions Capacity Building Program is accepting applications for its summer program. The program is designed to expand federal health care grant and contract opportunities at campuses. Administrators and support staff in Office of Sponsored Programs and Research - or its equivalent program - are encouraged to apply. HACU Alumni & Interns team up with “Hands on DC”
Christopher Hoppe (pictured at left), HACU Alumni Association member and alumnus of the HACU intern class of 1995, led a group of HACU interns on a community service project with “Hands on DC.” Volunteers included (continuing from left) current interns Anita Tambay, Jeffrey Zelaya, Jessica Porteiro, Didesta Vasquez, and HACU alumna Mable Cao from the intern class of 2007. More than 40 volunteers painted murals inside the Historic Cardoza Senior High School, including portraits of Barack Obama, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Frida Kahlo and Jeffrey Vargas. Anyone in the DC area interested in volunteering for an April 25 event is encouraged to contact Jeffrey Zelaya at jeffzelaya@gmail.com. HACU Alumni and current HNIP interns are encouraged to participate.

What will it take to increase Hispanics in STEM? Money, of course The National Science Foundation came to Hispanic-serving institutions for advice on the best way to tackle the dearth of Latinos in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The advice from college administrators gathered for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities’ Capitol Forum came back loud and clear: Pay Hispanic students to do research, or you’ll never get them – and keep them – in STEM fields. Ben Ray Luján discussed at the Capitol Forum the need to strengthen innovation through promoting education and the role Hispanic - Serving Institutions (HSIs) will play in preparing Hispanics for the jobs of the future. Academic-Community Partnership Conference Series (U13) These applications are to conduct health disparities-related meetings, workshops, and symposia. Areas of focus may include these community-health issues: infant mortality; sudden infant death syndrome; violence prevention; techniques for information dissemination; childhood, adolescent, and/or adult obesity; health literacy; uterine fibroid tumors; and pediatric and maternal HIV/AIDS prevention. Deadline to apply, April 7 - Young Hispanic Leaders Program. The annual program allows future Hispanic leaders from the U.S. to familiarize themselves firsthand with Spain’s political, economic, social and cultural environment. The program will take place June 13 - 21, in Santander and Madrid. A committee of members of the participating institutions will select a total of fifteen candidates and will provide travel, lodging, food and health insurance expenses for the entire group. Applicants must be U.S. citizenship and of Hispanic origin, ages 28 - 38, with good knowledge of Spanish and acceptance of the conditions, schedule and program of events of the seminar.
