HACU accepting scholarship applications
The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) is accepting online applications for the HACU Scholarship Program through May 22 for the 2009-2010 academic year.  More than $400,000 will be awarded to eligible students attending HACU-member colleges and universities. HACU partners on campaign to ensure Hispanics are counted in 2010 Census

HACU was among the 2010 Census National Partners that met in the nation’s capital on March 30 for an exclusive briefing on the 2010 Census. Maria Elena Vivas-House, Executive Director of the HACU National Internship Program, represented HACU. More than 200 national partners from around the country attended a briefing. Antonio Flores, HACU president and CEO, is one of the leaders featured in a video entitled "2010 Census: A New Portrait of America - Latino/Hispanic" that explains how communities benefit from Census Bureau data collection efforts. Testimonials in this video describe the importance of a complete count to the Latino/Hispanic community and why the 2010 Census will be the most important count in our nation's history. More>>

HACU joins forces to host International Conference
Three major higher education organizations will host their first Joint International Conference in Guadalajara, Mexico, April 22-24, 2009.  The theme of the conference, hosted by The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE-OUI) and Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC), is "An Inter-American Higher Education Collaboration: Working together to Shape the Future of our Communities.”

Flores to speak at Latino Leadership Summit
Antonio Flores, HACU President and CEO, will be a keynote speaker at the Georgia State University Latino College Leadership Summit on Saturday, April 4, 2009. The theme of the conference is "Strategies for Emerging Latino Leaders of Tomorrow." The  event is being held by Georgia State University's Center for Latin American and Latino/a Studies, an interdisciplinary teaching, research, and community service program for the Latin American and Latino communities in Georgia. Georgia State University is a HACU-member Institution.


Students can apply for free air travel awards 
Applications will be accepted for the 5th Annual "Dándole Alas a Tu Éxito/Giving Flight to Your Success" travel award program sponsored by Southwest Airlines and HACU beginning this Friday. Through this national education initiative, Southwest will provide roundtrip airline tickets to undergraduate and graduate students across the country with socio-economic need who travel away from home to pursue a higher education. Deadline - June 5, 2009. More.  

HACU-DHHS summer program dates announced – apply by April 17
Applications are still being accepted for the 2009 HACU - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Professions Capacity Building Program. The summer program is open to administrators and support staff in the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research – or its equivalent program.  Participants receive paid travel, lodging expenses, and a stipend. An online application and supporting documents must be submitted by Friday, April 17, 2009. More>>

Young Hispanic Leaders Program - Apply by April 7
The annual program allows future Hispanic leaders from the U.S. to familiarize themselves firsthand with Spain’s political, economic, social and cultural environment. The program will take place June 13 - 21, in Santander and Madrid. A committee of members of the participating institutions will select a total of fifteen candidates and will provide travel, lodging, food and health insurance expenses for the entire group. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and of Hispanic origin, ages 28 - 38, with good knowledge of Spanish and acceptance of the conditions, schedule and program of events of the seminar.

The 2009 NHGRI Summer Workshop in GenomicsApply by April 10
An intensive, six-day course is offered by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and will be held August 2 - August 7, 2009. The course is designed to update biology instructors, as well as other instructors and researchers in related disciplines, on genomic science.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration, in partnership with the Economic Development Administration, the Minority Business Development Administration, and other federal and regional strategic partners, has organized a free one-day seminar, April 21,  to highlight the broad range of international trade opportunities for U.S. business in the Western Hemisphere, created through the success of the Free Trade Agreements. The seminar will be held in Puerto Rico.

Growing What Works for Latino Students in Higher Education

Excelencia in Education, supported by the Wal-Mart Foundation, will award twenty Wal-Mart SEMILLAS grants of $50,000 each to institutions that replicate promising practices on their campus in 2009 - 2010 on the  the basis of: Commitment to accelerating Latino student success; Knowledge of demographic trends affecting their institution and current institutional data on  student participation, persistence, and outcomes; and intent to continue effective programming beyond the  academic year.


DoD 2009 Minority-Serving Institutions Technical Assistance Workshop
On May 6, 2009, the Department of Defense (DoD) will host a free Technical Assistance Workshop at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The goal of the workshop is to increase participants’ levels of awareness in regards to identifying, proposing on, and being selected for business ventures (grants and/or contracts) with the federal government.

 MSI - Models of Success RFP - Apply by June 8
Lumina Foundation for Education has issued a Request for Proposals to launch its Minority-Serving Institutions-Models of Success program. Seeking to dramatically increase college completion, especially among first-generation students, low-income students and students of color, the program aims to partner with MSIs and other organizations to improve and document increased postsecondary attainment. Lumina Foundation especially invites proposals involving two or more MSI institutions and/or organizations with MSI expertise.
