HACU welcomes more summer interns
HACU staff welcomed 70 more students from colleges and universities nationwide to the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP). More than 300 students began the summer program earlier this month, with most serving in federal internships located in Washington, D.C., and field offices across the nation. HACU Statement on Student  Loan Interest Rate Legislation.
HACU commended the U.S. Congress for passing legislation on June 29, 2012 that will preserve financially manageable education for students and their families by maintaining current interest rates on need-based student loans at 3.4 percent.

Interest rates for need-based student loans would have doubled for students on July 1, 2012, but Congressional action before the 4th of July recess legislated interest rate relief to students for another year, at a time when they can least afford additional costs. More>> 

HACU Statement on the suspension of deportations of DREAM Act-eligible undocumented immigrants
HACU fully supported the Obama Administration's decision to cease deportations of DREAM Act-eligible undocumented immigrants, with deferred action for a period of two years with the possibility of a renewal for an additional two years, along with the opportunity to apply for work authorization. Candidates for relief must have been under 16 years of age when they were brought to the United States and not present a risk to national security or public safety. HACU previously called upon the President to take the lead with appropriate Congressional leaders to advance comprehensive immigration reform, particularly DREAM Act legislation, to foster educational opportunity and create a highly educated workforce to meet the needs of the national economy.
