HACU, USDA strengthen partnership;
Potential new funding streams discussed
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Ann Veneman met with the leadership of HACU to establish the foundation for potential new funding opportunities for the Hispanic higher education community. HACU will advise its membership on new funding and research opportunities expected to evolve through the ongoing work of the USDA/HACU Leadership Group.
Secretary Ann Veneman met in Washington, D.C., on August 3, 2004, with HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores and USDA/HACU Leadership Group member Jose Vicente, President of Miami Dade College’s North Campus in Florida. Issues discussed included:
- Potential new USDA research funding streams for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs);
- Expansion of the USDA’s longstanding partnership with the HACU National Internship Program;
- Potential new initiatives to aid HSIs in developing teacher education and extension outreach infrastructure capacity, especially in areas of agriculture-related fields of study.
