SENATE LIKELY TO VOTE ON THE DREAM ACT NEXT WEEK!

Action Alert--October 20, 2007
Senators Richard Durbin (D-IL) and other members of the Senate are set to take action on the DREAM Act within the next few days. HACU’s policy statement strongly supports advocacy “for the DREAM Act and other appropriate legislation, so that all students, and especially immigrant students, have the opportunity complete their college education and become contributors to the American Dream.”
The DREAM Act will provide a path to permanent residency and eventual citizenship for individuals brought to the U.S. years ago as undocumented children if they graduate from a U.S. high school and continue on to college or military service.
This may be the best chance this year for the DREAM Act to become law (although most likely it will not be the last opportunity). If the bill passes the Senate, the DREAM Act will have an excellent chance of becoming law this year. Following Senate action, the House will either adopt the Senate version of the bill or take action on DREAM Act legislation introduced in the House.
We do not yet know when the Senate bill will be introduced. Nevertheless, it is imperative for all DREAM Act supporters to immediately call and/or e-mail, or fax their Senators as soon as possible to underscore the importance of the DREAM Act for so many young persons who can one day make vital contributions to the economic and national security needs of the nation.

Remember that your e-mail, fax and telephone calls will offset efforts by anti-immigrant groups determined to prevent immigration reform and especially the DREAM Act from becoming law.
