Oregon

The Oregon Legislative Assembly is a bicameral legislature consisting of a lower house, House of Representatives with 60 members, and an upper house, the Senate with 30 members.  Each Senate district is composed of exactly two House districts with two representatives and one senator sharing each of the state's 30 electoral districts.

There are no term limits for either house in the Legislative Assembly.

Statewide Elected Officials:

  • Governor: Kate Brown (D), 1st Term
  • Lieutenant Governor: No position of Lt. Governor.  The Governor is succeeded by the Secretary of State.
  • Attorney General: Ellen Rosenblum (D)
  • Secretary of State: Dennis Richardson (R)
  • Capital: Salem
  • Population of Latinos/Hispanics: 12.8%

Legislative Session and Budget Timetable

The Oregon Legislature meets in odd-numbered years for 160 calendar days, and meets in even-numbered years for 35 calendar days.  The state budget is biennial covering two fiscal years.

September- State agencies submit their budget requests to the Governor.

September-November- Agency hearings are held.

December- The Governor submits a budget proposal.

January to June- The Legislature debates and adopts the biennial budget.
