Obama declares National HSIs Week

President Barack Obama has issued a Proclamation designating the week of September 18-24, 2011, as National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) Week. HSI presidents and chancellors are encouraged to celebrate this week on their campuses. Click here for suggestions shared in May to celebrate National HSIs Week.  Download a PDF flyer

HACU thanks Senators Robert Menendez and John Cornyn for introducing a resolution which will recognize the contributions of HSIs in their communities. The Association also thanks Congressmen Raúl Grijalva and Rubén Hinojosa for their efforts in introducing in the House, H.Res. 400, to recognize the establishment of a National HSIs Week and commemorate the Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities (HACU) 25th Anniversary.

Below are some facts about HSIs gathered by the HACU office of research:

  • Defined by the Higher Education Act as degree-granting institutions with Full-Time Equivalent undergraduate enrollments that are at least 25% Hispanic.
  • In 2010, 311 institutions met the federal enrollment criterion, enrolling 1,348,513 Hispanic students in postsecondary (non-profit) schools.
  • HSIs represent 9% of non-profit colleges and universities in the country, yet enroll 16% of all students in postsecondary (non-profit) schools, and serve 54% of all Hispanic students.
  • HSIs receive 66 cents for every dollar going to all other colleges and universities annually, per student, from all federal funding sources.
  • The number of HSIs is rapidly growing, from 137 institutions in 1990 to 172 in 1995, to 230 in 2000, to 253 in 2005 and 311 in 2010
