Statement from HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores on the Passing of Congressman Donald Payne

On behalf of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and its more than 400 education institutions representing close to five million students in the United States, I want to express our sense of loss on the passing of Congressman Donald M. Payne (D-NJ).

The Congressman will be deeply missed by the state of New Jersey and by the nation.

Congressman Payne’s 10th district included New Jersey City University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). He was a strong supporter of HSIs and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through his efforts to represent the marginalized.    He knew education first hand, having been a public school teacher in Newark and Passaic, New Jersey.

Congressman Payne will leave an indelible mark in the history of the quest for equity and opportunity. We are inspired by his life and share his commitment to assuring that all Americans have a real opportunity to achieve the American dream.
