The purpose of the forum is to address issues and opportunities for the academic success of Hispanic students in higher education. Over 50.5 million Hispanics resided in the U.S. in 2010, with an additional 3.9 million in Puerto Rico, representing approximately 16.3% of the overall U.S. population. However, 37.2% of Hispanics 25-years-old and over had not completed high school, compared to 12.5% of non-Hispanic whites. Only 13.9% of Hispanics have a bachelor’s degree and 4% an advanced degree, compared to 30.3% and 10.7% for non-Hispanic whites.
Discussions will address how university leaders can implement policies and practices that make higher education more accessible for Hispanic students. Attendees will share approaches to challenges, effective practices, and promising ideas.
The agenda will also include discussions on demographics; strategies for recruiting Hispanic students; methods for helping Hispanic students succeed; and available resources as well as “next” steps in advancing Hispanic educational opportunities.
