"SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) today praised a bipartisan compromise in Congress regarding jurisdiction of minority higher education.

“This week’s compromise returns jurisdiction of minority higher education issues to the House Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness, which already has jurisdiction over non-minority higher education issues,” HACU President and CEO Antonio Flores said.

“Our nation’s needs are better served when everyone is invited to the table to address our higher education challenges for this new century,” Flores said.

Flores praised the efforts of those in Congress who acted to resolve an issue that had prompted controversy over an earlier effort to delegate minority higher education issues to a separate House Select Education Subcommittee. That subcommittee also has jurisdiction over adoption and other non-education matters.

Under the compromise, the Select Education subcommittee will retain oversight responsibility for minority colleges, while the 21st Century Subcommittee will have jurisdiction for programs aimed at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and other campuses with large minority populations.

“HACU applauds the efforts of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for its swift and successful actions to resolve this matter,” Flores said.

“The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has been a long-time champion of the higher education hopes of Hispanics and of all Americans,” Flores said. “Their leadership role during the negotiations this week again makes us grateful for their wisdom, vision and unwavering commitment to the shared education needs of our country’s diverse citizenry.”

HACU represents more than 270 colleges and universities with high Hispanic student enrollment rates In the United States and abroad.
