HACU urges Senate Judiciary Committee to move passage of S. 744 forward

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to preserve language in S. 744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, that would create several programs to improve STEM education at Minority Serving Institutions and the K-12 level. If authorized, S. 744 would provide funding to help MSIs create and improve their STEM programs; over 309 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) have the capacity to teach and conduct research in the STEM areas.

Committee members have also been urged to vote in favor of several amendments that would make S. 744 one of the strongest DREAM Act versions to date: Senator Blumenthal’s “Little DREAMER’s amendment,” Senator Hirono’s amendment to ensure Dreamers have access to federal student aid and Senator Coons’ amendment to ensure Dreamers are able to get professional licenses.
