HACU President to make the case for an NSF HSI program and increased funding for HSIs

HACU president and CEO Antonio R. Flores will visit Washington, D.C., during HSIs week and meet with several members of Congress to advocate for increased investments to HSIs. At the top of the list for discussion are HACU’s grave concerns about the NSF’s reluctance to implement a grant program for HSIs. The recent Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) House Appropriations Subcommittee FY 2014 report went against the call of Congress in the America COMPETES Act of 2007 and the Reauthorization signed by President Obama in December 2010 to create an HSI program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). HACU is urging the House Appropriations Committee to amend the language in the report so that HSIs can receive dedicated NSF funding similar to other Minority-Serving Institutions grant programs.

Flores will also discuss the need for increased funding for other HSI programs, including Title V Parts A and B and funds for Hispanic-Serving Agricultural Colleges and Universities as Congress begins to address reauthorization of the Higher Education Act and the Farm Bill.
