HACU to host Town Hall on Hispanic STEM education in Chicago, Oct. 28

Macari, Cardona, Rosenberg and Visconti to serve on panel

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) will host a Town Hall on "Building Hispanic Participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM),” 3:30-5:00 p.m. in Continental AB-Lobby Level on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013 at the Hilton Chicago. The Town Hall is part of HACU’s premier conference on Hispanic higher education, its 27th Annual Conference, taking place Oct. 26-28, 2013.

Recent figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that the number of Hispanic students enrolling in colleges and universities from 2011 to 2012 increased from 11 to 17 percent of the college student population.

Panelists representing higher education, corporate and public policy will discuss the current state of Hispanic STEM education and the potential impact on national competitiveness in the global marketplace.

The panel includes:

Moderator Emir José Macari, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University (CSU), Sacramento, was awarded the White House/NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship in 1992 and served as dean of the College of Science and Technology at the University of Texas at Brownsville before his appointment at CSU Sacramento.  

Panel member Maria Cardona is a principal at the Dewey Square Group (DSG), the founder of Latinovations, and a CNN/CNN en Español political contributor. Cardona has more than two decades of experience in government, politics, public relations and community affairs as a public policy advocate and political strategist.

Panel member Mark B. Rosenberg, Ph.D., fifth president of Florida International University (FIU) and the first FIU faculty member appointed to the office, has more than 35 years of higher education experience. Rosenberg served as chancellor for the Board of Governors of the State University System of Florida, is the founder of the FIU Latin American and Caribbean Center and is the founding dean of the College of Urban and Public Affairs.

Panel member Luke Visconti, chief executive officer of DiversityInc Media LLC, directs the consulting, editorial and business operations, including the 13-year-old DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity. He founded the DiversityInc Foundation in 2006, has endowed scholarships at Bennett College, New Jersey City University and Rutgers University, and has a combined 22 years of higher-education board experience.
