NEIU makes $1,000 promise to 400 students from Chicago Public Schools during HACU’s Youth Leadership Development Forum


More than 400 middle and high school students attended the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) Youth Leadership Development Forum on Oct. 25, 2013 at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU).

Eighth and ninth grade students at the event learned that they were eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship if they chose to attend Northeastern after high school. Northeastern, a HACU-member institution, offered the scholarship as part of its efforts to encourage Latino students to pursue a college education and science careers.

The students in attendence from area Chicago Public Schools heard from Jose Hernandez, former NASA astronaut and attended 20 concurrent sessions of STEM focused workshops, followed by a College and STEM Fair and a campus tour.

The forum was co-sponsored by HACU and NEIU in colloboration with CTC@NEIU, GEAR UP Chicago, and TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science. Additional support came from Columbia College Chicago NSF.
