A HACU Student Success Symposium brought together representatives from more than 30 institutions to share resources and best practices on student success on Dec. 8, 2014.
The symposium held at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, included the following presentations:The afternoon session included a presentation on “Engagement in High Impact Practices: A Case Study,” and expert consulting period. The symposium concluded with a keynote address “The demographic dividend: Opportunities to advance Latina/o postsecondary attainment in the U.S.,” by Anne Marie Nuñez, Ph.D., The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The symposium grew out of a Student Success Collaborative funded by the Walmart Foundation that paired two community colleges, two four-year public institutions and two four-year private institutions, all Hispanic-Serving Institution, in an institutional mentoring program. The aim was for institutions to learn from each other how to better retain and graduate Hispanic students. The original program also involved six Historically Black Colleges and Universities and six Tribal Colleges and Universities in similar mentoring pairs and offered opportunities for all three sectors to learn from each other.
