GM Foundation Grant to empower youths to seek careers in STEM fields

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) is among the recipients of a General Motors Foundation Grant. The GM Foundation announced grants totaling $1 million will fund Hispanic education and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) initiatives to help empower young Latinos to join the workforce of the future. The grants benefit many of the nation’s leading Hispanic organizations.

For HACU, a $25,000 grant will help support an initiative to increase awareness of STEM majors and careers among high school students. The GM Foundation grant will help support a Youth Leadership Development Forum (YLDF) being held on Oct. 9, 2015, at Florida International University for high school students from area Hispanic-Serving School Districts.

“We appreciate the support of the GM Foundation on STEM initiatives for the Hispanic community,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “The grant will help to introduce students from our Hispanic-Serving Schools Districts to career opportunities in the STEM fields.”

For decades, GM and its philanthropic foundation have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to organizations across the country and around the world.

“We recognize the increasing importance of investing in the education and empowerment of Hispanic youth,” said GM Foundation Vice President Lori Wingerter. “Through these grants, we hope to make a lasting difference in their lives and in their communities.” Read the full release here
